I spent my last week in Kampala working on a portrait series on the local LGBT community. Uganda may be one of the worst places in the world to be openly gay — the anti-homosexuality bill that’s going to be reintroduced during the next session of Parliament further criminalizes homosexuality and even calls for the death penalty in certain extreme cases. Late last year, one of the local tabloids published a list of “Uganda’s 100 Top Homos” under a banner reading “Hang Them,” along with photos, names, work addresses, and so on. This January, one of Kampala’s most outspoken LGBT activists, David Kato, was beaten to death.

In other words, Kampala is a very, very scary place for its gay community. And while there’s been a moderate amount of media coverage since the introduction of the bill and since Kato’s death, photographic documentation is slim, for obvious reasons. There is a small, defiant core of activists who are “out” and visible in Kampala, but the rest of the LGBT community is most definitely in the closet. No one outside of the gay community has a clue, not even their families. Being photographed for a story on the gay community more often than not means death threats, having to find a new house or apartment, or having to find a new job.

What struck me most of all — and what prompted this series — is that for almost every gay couple in Kampala only one partner (at most) is ever out, making it virtually impossible for couples to appear in public together. There’s no such thing as a romantic dinner, a quick kiss at the local bar (unless it’s at Sappho’s, Kampala’s lone gay hangout), or hand-holding while running errands. This is my attempt to capture the loneliness of those secret relationships.

I was massively underwhelmed by today’s independence ceremonies, largely because of the absolutely disastrous way that the military organized the media and the (four hour delayed) afternoon became a logistical nightmare with very few photo ops. I’ll post photos eventually, but I’m fairly indifferent about most of the images I shot today so I’d rather share some pics from last night, from roughly 10pm-1am. In contrast to today’s fiasco, it was simply the most effusive outpouring of joy and happiness I’ve ever seen — people were dancing in the streets, singing, screaming, lighting fireworks. Difficult to shoot given that there’s absolutely no street lighting in Juba, but I think these capture the mood, even if they aren’t the best photos.

It is shockingly, shockingly easy to just waltz onto the runway here — although I suppose the hordes of SPLA soldiers with AK-47s are law enforcement enough.
